Nordic Retail Station Network

Over 600,000 customer visits per day

St1’s distribution network for transport fuels comprises over 1,400 St1 and Shell petrol stations in Finland, Sweden and Norway. The Shell brand is in use under a licence agreement. The two brands complement each other: with their different offerings and strong service concepts we can reach a wider customer base. All in all, there are over 600,000 customer visits at our sites every day.

The number of stations amounts to some 500 in Finland, nearly 500 in Sweden and 400 in Norway. The optimised distribution network consists of unmanned stations and service stations with convenience stores and restaurants as well as HGV sites. We are investing in the quality of the network by replacing exiting stations with new ones and by revamping large stations. We also constantly improve the service offering at the stations based on changing customer needs.

We hold a solid market position in all the countries we operate in. The effectiveness of retail operations has an important role in enabling us to invest in the production of renewable energy. The fuel procurement company North European Oil Trade (NEOT) ensures that we can provide our clients with competitive, and more and more environmentally friendly fuel products.

Smart fuels for Nordic drivers

The St1 and Shell retail stations offer high-quality fuel products for all kinds of vehicles. The oil industry experts at the St1 refinery in Gothenburg are dedicated to refining liquid fuels that are designed for the demanding driving conditions in the Nordic countries. All our products meet the local and European standards for traffic fuels.

Our goal is to reduce fossil CO₂ emissions in traffic step-by-step by bringing smart and more environmentally friendly fuels into the market.

Constant product development

The majority of St1 business operations are still based on fossil fuels. This is why we develop and bring to the market fuels for use in conventional vehicles as well – aiming at better fuel economy and sustainability. The fastest way to offer motorists sustainable and renewable fuels is to develop and improve existing products.

We have introduced new premium fuels and products that contain more renewable fuel in all the Nordic countries we operate in. For example, to the St1 network in Finland we have brought 95 E10 Extra petrol which reduces fuel consumption and a new diesel – Diesel plus – which contains renewable diesel. We have also replaced the previous 95 petrol sold in all Shell stations in Finland with the new Shell FuelSave 95, which has better fuel efficiency and is less expensive to use.

In Sweden we have launched 1st REnewable fuels in the St1 retail network. They contain more renewable fuel than any other product available for standard diesel and gasoline cars on the Swedish fuel market.  We have also introduced REx Diesel, Norway’s first genuine renewable diesel, which reduces CO₂ emissions by up to 40 % from the emissions of regular diesel.

Advanced high-blend ethanol

St1 biorefines advanced ethanol from waste and it is in our high blend ethanol fuels in the Finnish market,  such as the unique RE85 for flexfuel vehicles and RED95 for Scania's ethanol diesel engines for heavy duty vehicles.  Our advanced waste-base ethanol can be used as a bio-component in petrol as well.

Services for people on the go

Depending on the location, our network serves different needs of people on the go. Our manned St1 and Shell stations in the Nordics offer café/restaurant services in comfortable surroundings. Most of them also have a shop inside the station.

In Finland, we have brought back good old personal service at station forecourts by introducing Service Masters who can fill the drivers’ tanks and offer some other services to the customers. Both networks have invested in efficient, environmentally friendly car wash services that can be easily booked online.

Both brands offer competitive fuel cards for consumer and corporate clients. The St1 and Shell cards can even be cross-used in both networks in the Nordics. Our Nordic customer service centre in Stockholm serves the customers in Finland, Sweden and Norway in various needs and questions. The Service Master phone service and mobile application are easy channels to get help on the go.

Among the first issuers in Finland and Sweden, we have made Apple Pay available to our customers.  It is transforming mobile payments with an easy, secure and private way to pay that's fast and convenient. Also, the new St1 Mastercard is  available to customers in these two countries. It can be issued virtually to the customer in minutes and used immediately with Apple Pay.
